This is a technique that is standard in my practice over the past 20 years. We accurately approximate the skin edges of the wound with a surface medical glue.
The rationale behind this practice is to achieve perfect healing and minimize any possible visible scars.
Rationale:
1. Eyelid skin heals rapidly, when stitches are used, due to the rapidity of the healing process, skin cells can grow into the stitch holes resulting in stitch marks that can be long term.
2. The skin heals by the infiltration of cells from the blood on
to the tissue to promote healing. When stitches are used, they are foreign bodies, and will present a distraction to the cells promoting healing, resulting in the cells transforming into inflammatory cells due to the stitches (man-made foreign body). These inflamed cells lay down more scar tissues resulting in a stiffened and more swollen scar.
