Breast Augmentation with Implants

This operation involves the insertion of synthetic material to the breast to enlarge the breast. Commonly, silicone prothesis is used due to the natural feel of the prothesis. Conventionally, saline filled silicone bags were used, however, the feel of this prothesis is less pleasing when compared to silicone prothesis and it is possible at times to feel the edges of the prothesis due to the two different media of differing viscosity. We advise the use of anatomically shaped implants that give a normal breast contour.

Breast Implant Removal

Some patients may want to remove previously inserted implants due to leakage of silicone, hardened breast (with capsular contracture) causing distortion of shape or simply for personal reasons.

During the surgery, apart from removing the old breast implants, the surgeon may remove any leaked implant material as well as the hardened capsule which is similar to an internal scar that your body makes in response to the implants.

You may choose to

  • replace the implants with new ones
  • opt for fat grafting
  • or none at all

Fat grafting

Fat can be harvested and injected into the breast to increase the volume of the breast. This is usually done under general anaesthesia. The fat is harvested from your own body, processed and then injected into the breast to create a breast mound.

Breast Reconstruction

  • The loss of a breast due to breast cancer can be a very traumatic experience for the patient. It is possible for the breast to be reconstructed. This provides normality and symmetry to the patient. Although we also perform reconstruction with silicone implants, our preference is to reconstruct the breast using the patients’ own tissue.
  • The tissue can be harvested from the back or lower abdomen.
  • The surgery is done simultaneously during the mastectomy operation and if needed, we also create a new nipple for the reconstructed breasts.
  • If you have had your breasts removed previously and have completed chemo and radiotherapy, we can also reconstruct the breast using your own tissue.

Breast Mastopexy/Breast Lift

With age, the breasts will start to sag. The ligaments that suspend the breast tissue against the chest wall (called the Cooper’s suspensory ligaments) become loose, and cause the breast tissue to fall forward bringing the nipple-areolar complex (NAC) together with it. The breast tissue also involutes with post pregnancy changes and results in overstretched skin with underlying empty breast tissue. This surgery aims to lift the breasts to a higher, natural position and to return an attractive shape to the breasts. It can be combined with breast reduction or augmentation surgery at the same setting. The options for placement of the scar can be discussed to best suit your requirement and needs. During this surgery, we can also alter the size and shape of the nipple and areolar that may have been distorted with aging and pregnancy changes.

Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is an enlargement of the male breast gland due to an imbalance in the hormones, which causes excess fat to deposit on the chest. It can happen to any man at any age. The appearance of enlarged breast can cause emotional discomfort and impairs one’s self confidence. The purpose of this surgery is to correct the breast size, enhancing and flattening the chest. Breast tissue will also be sent for pathology reporting.
